Continuing Care Hospital
UnityPoint Health - Continuing Care Hospital (CCH) at St. Luke's is a "hospital within a hospital." As a separate area within St. Luke's, CCH cares for critically ill patients that need intense treatment and extra time to recover.
How is CCH different from regular hospital care?
CCH is sometimes also called a Long Term Acute Care Hospital (LTACH) specializing in acute care for a longer time period than a typical hospital stay. CCH patients require hospitalization for an average of 20 - 30 days.
Many patients in CCH depend on technology such as ventilators, special monitors or dialysis.
One benefit of CCH is we can move acutely ill patients out of an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to a more healing and family-oriented environment where we can focus on rehabilitation, while still providing for the patient's acute needs. For further information, you may view our comparison of care levels by facility.

CCH cares for patients with conditions such as:
- Respiratory disorders
- Ventilator dependency
- Complex wounds
- Multi-system failure
- Renal disorders
- Heart disease
- Infectious diseases
- Neurological conditions
- Nutritional impairment
CCH has 24 newly remodeled private rooms. Rooms are large, as family and friend visits are encouraged for CCH patients. CCH also has a convenient family lounge and therapy gym.
Joint Commission accreditation
CCH at St. Luke's has earned accreditation from the Joint Commission, an independent, not-for-profit organization established to set the standards by which health care quality is measured. The Joint Commission evaluates the quality and safety of care for nearly 16,000 health care organizations. To maintain and earn accreditation, organizations must have an extensive on-site review at least once every three years to evaluate the organization's performance in areas that affect patient care.
Patients can be referred to CCH by a physician, nurse, case manager, social worker, patient or family member. To contact us about a referral, please call 319/286-4324. Patients should be expected to need acute care for at least three weeks to be considered for admission to CCH.
