Department Descriptions

Cardiac Care Unit (CCU)
This adult medical cardiology unit is located in the north wing of the fifth floor west building. The nurse's station features bedside and central EKG, as well as invasive pressure monitoring systems.

Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
This adult medical/surgical intensive care unit is located on the second floor center west building. The nurse's station is equipped with a central monitor station for EKG and pressure monitoring. In addition, four telemetry monitors are available, as needed.

3 West
Our adult pre- and post-operative surgical, cardiothoracic surgical step-down nursing unit has telemetry in each room. It's located on the third floor west building.

3 Center Telemetry
This adult medical/cardiac step-down nursing unit is outfitted with telemetry monitoring in every room and located on the third floor west building.

3 East
This is a closed psychiatric unit on the third floor east building for child/adolescent patients, ages 5 to 17.

5 East
Located on the fifth floor east building, this medical unit is for adult medical patients who do not require intensive nursing care.

5 Center Neurology/Cancer Care
Located on the fifth floor center building, this unit includes inpatient and outpatient nursing areas - each room equipped with telemetry monitoring. Patients receive blood transfusions, chemotherapy, and miscellaneous IV therapy and procedures in the outpatient section.

Pediatrics/Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
Located on the second floor of the Helen G. Nassif Center for Women's and Children's Health - at the corner of 11th Street and A Avenue. This unit is designed to accommodate both parental rooming-in and sibling visitation and cares for children, ages neonate to 18, who have a diagnosis of primarily respiratory illness or injuries. The unit is staffed by skilled RNs and equipped with the very latest technology in the industry.

Birth Care Center
Three of every four babies born in Cedar Rapids are delivered at St. Luke's Birth Care Center - a centerpiece of the Helen G. Nassif Center for Women's and Children's Health. Located on the first floor of that facility, the center features three dozen single-room maternity care suites, as well as operating rooms for Cesarean births. Primary care nurses in this unit specialize in mother/baby nursing care.

Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Located on the second floor of the Helen G. Nassif Center for Women's and Children's Health. Designated a Level II Regional facility, St. Luke's is the only hospital in the area able to provide neonatal transport services and a high level of ventilator and respiratory support care. It features individual rooms in which light, noise and temperature can be completely controlled and where parents can room-in. Because of the number of neonates we treat via transfer, nurses have the opportunity to develop specialized competencies and become transport team members. We promote a multidisciplinary approach that includes neonatal nurses, physicians, physical therapists, dietitians, social workers, lactation consultants and developmental specialists.

Family Health Center
Our Family Health Center is an outpatient family planning clinic located at 4251 River Center Court NE Cedar Rapids with satelite clinics in Anamosa, Vinton, Cornell College, Kirkwood Community College and the Community Health Free Clinic in Cedar Rapids.

2 East
This is a closed psychiatric unit on the second floor east building for adult patients, ages 18 to 60.

1 West
Created for geriatric psychiatric patients - ages 60 and older who are experiencing mental illness or dementia - this unit is located on the first floor west building.

Chemical Dependency
This special, outpatient treatment service, for adult patients who have alcoholic and substance abuse addictive diseases, has offices at 1030 Fifth Avenue SE, Suite 110 (Cedar Rapids) and 443 Highway 1 West (Iowa City).

Adult Partial Hospitalization
This program is located on the north wing of the third floor center building and is designed for adult psychiatric patients who do not pose a danger to themselves or others, and have other community support.

Adolescent LIFE Program
Located at 4050 River Ridge Drive, the Adolescent LIFE program provides both partial and day treatment services to adolescents, ages 12 to 18.

Children's Treatment
This intensive outpatient treatment program can provide treatment for up to eight elementary-aged school children and is located on the 3E Child/Adolescent Center.

Counseling Center
With offices located on the third floor of the hospital's Resource Center and Hiawatha Children's Campus, the Family Counseling Center makes psychotherapy, assessment and referral services available to both in- and outpatients.

Operating Room
Located on the second floor (center) of the main building on the hospital campus, the hospital's operating room complex provides invasive and noninvasive procedures to inpatients, same day and outpatients.

Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
This unit is located on the second floor, within the operating room complex, of the main building on the hospital campus.

SurgiCare
Built in the early 1980s to provide pre- and post-operative care for patients and a comfortable waiting area for family and friends, SurgiCare features private rooms and is located on the north side of the center building, second floor. SurgiCare is available to patients of all ages who are admitted for a same-day procedure and will be either discharged that day or transferred to an inpatient unit following their procedure.

Digestive Health Center
This specialized unit provides diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic services to inpatients and outpatients and is located on fourth floor east building. The centralized nurse's station is equipped with portable and telemetry monitoring devises.

Emergency Department
Located in the diagnostic wing of the first floor of the main building, Emergency treats more than 50,000 patients annually - for everything from catastrophic injury or illness to scraped knees and sore throats. The second busiest ER in the state, features 34 treatment rooms (four designated for cardiac treatment, as well as eye, ENT, orthopaedic, trauma/pediatric, suture/exam and gyn/exam). Emergency is also home to Lifeguard air ambulance.

4 West
This orthopedic unit is located in the north and west wings on the hospital's fourth floor west building and is primarily designed for adolescent, adult and geriatric patients who have inflammatory, traumatic, metabolic and oncologic muscoskeletal disorders.

4 Center Skilled Nursing Facility
Located on the fourth floor center building in the south and west wings - with a centrally located nursing station - this specialized unit features 28 beds. The patient primarily includes medical / surgical patients who meet admission criteria for a skilled nursing facility.

5 West
5W provides care for urology, gynecology, general surgery and ENT patients. The unit is located on the fifth floor center building in the south and west wings and has a centrally located nurse's station.

6 West Rehabilitation
This CARF-accredited inpatient rehabilitation unit is located on the sixth floor west building and offers comprehensive, interdisciplinary rehabilitation programs for patients of all ages who are dealing with physical, cognitive and/or mental disabilities.
