Seasonal influenza, also called flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu is with a flu vaccination each fall. October and November is the best time, but getting a flu vaccine in December or even later can still be beneficial since most influenza activity occurs in January or later.
