UnityPoint Clinic welcomes Neurosurgeon Jaime Gasco
Growing up in Spain, Gasco was required to choose a high school career pathway in either art or sciences when he was only 13. "Then I had to take it a step further and decide whether I wanted to pursue pure science or mixed sciences," he recalled. "My brother Luis went through a book of career listings with me starting with the letter A and when he got to the letter M and said Medicine I said, 'that one!' Then I had to choose among all of the existing specialties and we once again went down the list of the names and descriptions and I picked neurosurgery immediately. It was an instinctive fit."
At 16, Gasco met one of Spain's first female neurosurgeons, Dr. Carmen Alvarez Sastre. She was a family friend and invited him to watch her operate on a pediatric brain tumor. "I remember washing my hands for the first time for a case and I knew that was going to be my vocation," said Gasco.
Gasco went to the University of Virginia (UVA) four consecutive years during medical school to rotate in the prestigious neurosurgery service under renowned Dr. John A. Jane, Christopher Reeve's neurosurgeon. His formal neurosurgery training commenced in Spain's capital city of Madrid and subsequently went to UVA where he completed his surgical internship. During his residency training he was exposed to numerous nationally recognized neurosurgeons, among others Dr. Robert Grossman at the Methodist Neurological Institute, in Houston, TX, who treated JFK at Parkland Hospital in 1963, Dr. Dong Kim at UT Houston-Memorial Hermann, who operated on Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords after she was shot in the head during a public appearance and Dr. Raymond Sawaya, Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, pioneer in the treatment of brain tumors.
