Dr. Dustin Arnold appointed Director of Medical Affairs

Dustin Arnold, D.O., has been appointed director of medical affairs effective January 1, 2012, succeeding Dr. Charles Schauberger who left as Vice President, Chief Medical Officer last June.  Dr. Arnold will maintain his role as Chief Medical Information Officer for St. Luke’s Hospital and his clinical duties as a hospitalist.  In the medical affairs component of his role, Dr. Arnold will partner with Gail Stork, Administrative Director of Medical Affairs & Compliance. Since Dr. Schauberger’s departure last June, we have been reviewing our medical affairs initiatives.  Given our Partner of Choice for Physicians strategy, the development of New Group, and the system goal of integrating care delivery with physician leadership, we have restructured this position to be part-time and focused on working with the St. Luke’s Medical Executive Committee and the formal independent medical staff process. We believe having physician leaders who maintain a clinical practice is consistent with the philosophy of our team and New Group.

Dr. Arnold has been a member of St. Luke’s Medical Staff since 2005 and has led the development of our hospitalist program. Over the past year he has been providing physician leadership for IQ4/EPIC with Iowa Health System and at St. Luke’s.  He served as Vice President of the St. Luke’s Medical Staff in 2011 and is a graduate of the Iowa Health System Physician Leadership Academy. Dr. Arnold has also served on the interim system wide steering committee for New Group in 2011 and is a member of the St Luke’s Regional IDS Council. Please welcome Dr. Arnold in his new role.

Internists, P.C. joins St. Luke's
Internists P.C. (IPC), an internal medicine specialty clinic with seven physicians and a staff of 41, will become an af?liate of St. Luke’s Hospital effective Jan. 1, 2012. For several years, Internists, P.C. and  St. Luke’s have been discussing developing a new physician-hospital partnership that could better serve the physicians, hospital and community in an era of change and healthcare reform.

“Both Internists, P.C. and St. Luke’s see closer integration of physician and hospital services as the future of healthcare,” said Dr. Paynter, Internists, P.C. physician leader. “We believe this partnership better positions IPC, St. Luke’s and the community for whatever changes come out of national healthcare reform. This partnership will also improve our ability to retain and recruit internal medicine specialist to Cedar Rapids in the foreseeable future.

”Internists, P.C. will continue to serve their patients as they do today in their facility located at 115 Eighth Street, NE in Cedar Rapids. Employees of Internists, P.C. will become employees of St. Luke’s Hospital. The group’s 7 physicians will continue to see patients at both St. Luke’s and Mercy Medical Center. “We believe this partnership will strengthen our philosophy of physician integration to improve patient care. We look forward to working even more closely with IPC to improve the quality and reduce the cost of healthcare,” said John Sheehan, St. Luke’s executive vice president and chief operating officer. “This new collaboration is just one more step in pulling both hospitals and the physicians together to better serve our community in the future.”
