Electronic health records and revenue cycle update
Iowa Health System (IHS) has signed a contract with Epic to implement two system-wide solutions: an inpatient clinical electronic health records system and a revenue cycle operations system.
Dedicated staff members will lead the implementation of the systems and will be based in Cedar Rapids and Des Moines. Staffing is expected to be completed this month.
Also under way is the development of an overall project timeline and execution of a workflow analysis. The first IHS senior affiliate to implement the system will be determined by early October and will go live in the second half of 2011. The remaining sites will go live on a quarterly basis from 2012 through mid-2013.
Some of the applications included in the inpatient clinical system are:
• Computerized provider order entry (CPOE)
• Clinical documentation
• Interdisciplinary care planning
• Emergency department workflow
• Inpatient medication ordering and administration
• Operating room time management
• ICU/CCU support
• Health information management
Epic products that will enhance our revenue cycle programs, reporting and analytics ability and data sharing capabilities will also be implemented. The new Epic applications will replace CareCast applications. The software tools being implemented during the next few years will better position us to provide innovative and integrated care, share data across the system, self-adapt in response to changing environments and provide the Best Outcome for Every Patient Every Time.
More project details will follow when the timeline is complete in early October.

St. Luke’s Achieves Chest Pain Center Accreditation Status

cplogo.jpg St. Luke’ s Hospital in Cedar Rapids recently received Chest Pain Center Accreditation status from the Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC), an international organization dedicated to eliminating heart disease as the number one cause of death worldwide.

Hospitals that have received SCPC accreditation have achieved a higher level of expertise in dealing with patients who arrive with symptoms of a heart attack. They emphasize the importance of standardized diagnos tic and treatment programs that provide more efficient and effective evaluation as well as more appropriate and rapid treatment of patients with chest pain and other heart attack symptoms. They also serve as a point of entry into the healthcare system to evaluate and treat other medical problems, and they help to promote a healthier lifestyle in an attempt to reduce the risk factors for heart attack.

To become an Accredited Chest Pain Center, (Name of Facility) engaged in rigorous evaluation by SCPC for its ability to assess, diagnose, and treat patients who may be experiencing a heart attack. To the community served by (Name of Facility), this means that processes are in place that meet strict criteria aimed at:

  •  Reducing the time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis and treatment
  •  Treating patients more quickly during the critical window of time when the integrity of the heart muscle can be preserved
  •  Monitoring patients when it is not certain that they are having a heart attack to ensure that they are not sent home too quickly or needlessly admitted to the hospital

“By becoming an Accredited Chest Pain Center, St. Luke’s has enhanced the quality of care for its cardiac patients and has demonstrated its commitment to higher standards.” said Ted Townsend, president and CEO of St. Luke’s Hospital.”  “I congratulate all St. Luke’s associates who have worked diligently to acquire this designation.”
