NEW VIDEO: Expert offers advice for coping with toddlers

March 11, 2009

Nearly 400 moms, dads and even a few grandparents attended St. Luke’s Circle of Women event “How to have the Happiest Kids on the Block” featuring nationally known pediatrician and child development specialist Harvey Karp, MD earlier this month.

During the event Dr. Karp shared his tips on calming crying babies, which he calls the five S's — swaddling, side/stomach positioning in the parents' arms, shushing, swinging, and sucking. Dr. Karp says this activates the baby's calming reflex during the first three to four months of life by mimicking experiences in the uterus.

Dr. Karp also provided advice to parents about reducing tantrums in toddlers. According to Dr. Karp talking to your toddler is like speaking to a caveman.
