In celebration of National Doctors’ Day today, St. Luke's Hospital is recognizing area physicians. Doctors play a vital role in caring for the sick and promoting good health. They are important to the community, not only as caregivers, but also as neighbors, and leaders in many city and community groups.
The walls inside St. Luke's Hospital today are lined with hundreds of angel-shaped thank you notes to area doctors. The notes of appreciation were written by St. Luke's associates. St. Luke’s isn’t stopping at just one day of celebration – the hospital is also planning special events throughout the week to honor doctors.
Tomorrow, doctors may challenge St. Luke’s administration to a game of Wii tennis, basketball, golf or hula hoop in the OR physicians lounge. Other activities planned for the week are a special lunch, chair massages and a complimentary beverage of their choice from Brewed Awakenings in the A Avenue Lobby.
The United States House of Representatives adopted a resolution commemorating Doctors’ Day on March 30, 1958. In 1990, legislation was introduced into the United States House of Representatives and United States Senate to establish a National Doctors Day. Following overwhelming approval by the House and Senate, then-President George H.W. Bush signed a resolution designating March 30 as National Doctors’ Day. The first National Doctors’ Day was celebrated in 1991.
