The holidays can be filled with stress and excess. Here’s a list of simple ideas for healthy gift giving from a registered dietitian at St. Luke’s Nutrition Center.
Water bottle - A water bottle can multiple times and encourages consumption of water.
Whole-grain gift basket - Fill a basket with packages of whole grains, such as wild or brown rice, whole-wheat pasta and whole-wheat breads.
Walnuts - Walnuts contain omega-3 fat, which is good for the heart. Don't over do it. It only takes about 20 walnuts a day to enjoy the benefits.
Herbs - Herbs can replace salt in many recipes, which is a smart way to reduce blood pressure.
Lunch tote - Save money and calories by packing your own lunch.
Assorted teas - Green, black and herbal teas are the most antioxidant rich.
Pedometer - Helps keep track of the distance you walk. The more you walk -- the more calories you burn.
Chocolate - The healthiest chocolate is at least 70 percent cocoa. It doesn't take much — about 1.5 ounces a day — to enjoy chocolate's health benefits.
Fresh/dried fruit basket - This encourages healthy snacking while wrapping presents. It boosts fiber and vitamins to keep individuals healthy.
Massage - A relaxing gift to enjoy -- after the holidays.
