Neurosurgeon joins St. Luke’s medical staff

Mary Louise Hlavin, MD, has joined St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Dr. Hlavin is Board Certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. She also belongs to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons and American Medical Association.

Dr. Hlavin has been a practicing neurosurgeon for over twenty years. Previously Dr. Hlavin practiced at Mercy Medical Center, Iowa Methodist Medical Center and Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines.

Her doctor of medicine degree is from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, OH. Dr. Hlavin completed a general surgery internship and neurosurgery residency at University Hospitals of Cleveland, Cleveland, OH. Her fellowship training was at the National Hospital for Nervous Disease at Queen Square, London where she was sponsored by Cambridge University, England. From 1992-1998 Dr. Hlavin was an assistant professor of neurological surgery at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals of Cleveland.

Dr. Hlavin has served on numerous committees both in Ohio and Iowa – many pertaining to quality measures and received grants for research with the National Institutes of Health, March of Dimes and the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Hlavin’s first day at St. Luke’s is January 4.
