The second annual National Dress In Blue Day event will be held in communities and offices nationwide on Friday, March 5 as part of National Colon Cancer Awareness Month.
St. Luke’s Hospital is participating and encourages everyone to Dress in Blue to promote awareness about colon cancer, one of the few cancers individuals can prevent by getting screened early. Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in the country. Dress in Blue Day takes place on the first Friday in March and encourages individuals, businesses and community groups to wear blue and talk to each other about the importance of colon cancer screenings. Why do we need to raise awareness of Colorectal Cancer?
· Colorectal cancer is the #2 cause of cancer death in the U.S.
· Over 150,000 Americans will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer each year.
· Colorectal cancer often has no symptom at all until it's at an advanced stage.
· Colorectal cancer is 80 percent preventable when detected early.
· You can reduce your risk through regular screening.
· Beginning at age 50 (or earlier if you have a family history), everyone should be screened for colorectal cancer.
Additionally in recognition of National Colon Cancer Awareness Month, St. Luke’s is hosting an upcoming free community event, designed to educate individuals about symptoms, as well as ways to improve digestive health and colorectal cancer risks.
