Cedar Rapids Police Protective Association issues challenge & makes donation
The Cedar Rapids Police Protective Association will donate $5,000 to St. Luke’s Child Protection Center on Thursday, May 27 as part of its “Partners in Protection Challenge.” The check presentation will take place at 10 a.m. at St. Luke's Child Protection Center, which is located at 1095 North Center Point Rd. in Hiawatha.
“During May, which is national Law Enforcement Month, we challenge other Iowa law enforcement organizations to help St. Luke’s Child Protection Center, too,” said Cedar Rapids Police Sgt. Kent Choate. “This center is not only a valuable resource for abused children and families – it’s an important resource for the law enforcement officers who bring these cases to trial.”
According to Sgt. Choate, the Cedar Rapids Police Protective Association is made up of current and retired Cedar Rapids Police officers. He says their goal is to give back to the community that they protect.
Sgt. Choate says the association is involved in numerous activities and events throughout the year that help children and families including providing school supplies and clothing to children prior to the start of school, and a Santa Cop event that gives several hundred needy children a better holiday.
St. Luke’s Child Protection Center, which serves children and families in 50 Iowa counties, helps determine if child abuse has occurred, then develops a plan to protect the child and direct families into counseling. Staffers work with law enforcement officials and employees from the Department of Human Services to make sure perpetrators are held accountable.
