Family Centered Care

We understand that having a baby involves more people than just mom and baby. That’s why at St. Luke's, we believe in family centered care, which means the whole family is included in the birth. We’ll follow your lead when it comes to which family members you would like to have involved throughout your birth experience. Our family-centered approach also means that you and your baby will share the same nurse and your baby will be in your room with you as much as you want.

Sibling-attended births

Some couples want their baby's birth to be a family event attended by older children. We can help you to provide children with the needed education to be present at the birth. If you are planning to have your children present, please call 319/369-7580 to schedule an interview and necessary classes.

NICU family centered care

Our family centered care philosophy is also seen in our Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Each baby and family has their own individual room to minimize noise, ensure privacy and optimize care. We believe parents and their baby are at the center of the NICU child's care team. Therefore, we encourage the parents' presence, input and participation during their baby's NICU stay.

Iowa’s only March of Dimes NICU Family Support Program

We’re proud that our NICU was chosen as Iowa's first and only site to house the March of Dimes NICU Family Support Program. The project's purpose is to provide information and emotional support to families of critically ill newborns being cared for in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit.
