This class is for families preparing for their child(ren) three years old and over to be present at the birth. Careful preparation is necessary to promote a positive birth experience. Children to be present at birth are required to take the Brothers and Sisters Class before taking this class.
Families considering this experience should call three to four months before the due date to schedule the classes, have a telephone interview and receive the required paperwork. Discuss your desire to have your children present with your doctor. Required paperwork includes getting a doctor’s signature and approval before attending the class.
For children to be present at birth, they must each have their own support person – someone other than the mother’s support person. If more than one child will be present, each child will need to have their own support person to be with that child at all times. Friends and relatives are often good choices. Each child’s support person should plan to attend the Sibling Attended Birth Class with the child and parents.
There is a $15 fee for this program. Remember to call three to four months before the due date to schedule classes and complete required paperwork. For more information, call 319/369-7580 or 319/369-7166.
Brothers and Sisters Class is designed especially for the younger members of the family (age 3 or older) who are about to have a new brother or sister. They will spend an evening learning about the miracle of childbirth through discussions, picture books, and hands-on-experience. Correct terminology will be used and all questions answered. Please bring a baby picture of the child(ren) attending, and feel free to bring a camera.
The class includes a tour of the Birth Care Center. Children attending must be three years of age or older and should be accompanied by their parent(s). Please make sure the child is not ill or recently been exposed to an infectious illness. Children should attend the class during the last month of mom's pregnancy.
