Exercise and Cancer Patients

Cancer-related fatigue is the most common and distressing side effect reported by cancer patients. It can be the result of one or several factors including the cancer itself, stress or treatment side effects. Fatigue is complex because it can have both physical and psychosocial causes and effects.

One of the greatest benefits of exercise is its ability to lessen the effects of cancer-related fatigue. Research shows that regular exercise improves mood, body image, self-concept and sleep patterns. Patients who exercise have a significantly better quality of life than patients who do not.

The exercise portion of the Cook Cancer Wellness Program includes cardiovascular conditioning, muscle strengthening and stretching techniques. During your program, you’ll work with our Cancer Exercise Specialist to develop exercise goals based on your unique needs. Your exercise program may include:

  • Treadmill walking
  • Lower- and upper-body stretching and strengthening
  • Core muscle strengthening

A Cancer Exercise Specialist teaches, supervises and medically monitors each participant, including pre- and post-exercise blood pressure, pulse rate and heart rate recovery.

Our goal is for you experience better health by being physically active at diagnosis, during and after treatment, and remaining active throughout life.
