Stroke Rehabilitation

A stroke can change how you talk and walk, but it can’t change who you are. It’s this mindset that makes St. Luke’s Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation different. We do everything it takes to get you back to people, places and things you enjoy.

Individualized Plan
Stroke affects each person differently. Our range of therapies and programs can help each and every patient address the unique effects of a stroke.

  • Cognitive rehabilitation in areas including memory, reading, math and daily planning.
  • Neuropsychological and psychology counseling for patients who want to return to work or school or adjust to their limitations.
  • Driving program provides evaluations, on the road instruction and recommendations for vehicle modifications.
  • Leisure activities for patients, family and friends.

Functional Independence Measurement (FIM)
The FIM Instrument is a nationally recognized instrument that measures a patient’s functional abilities in areas such as eating, grooming, toileting, transfers, mobility, bowel/bladder management, communication and cognitive skills.

The FIM change rating shows how much a patient improved from admission to discharge. In 2011, 64 percent of St. Luke's stroke patients achieved their FIM goals during their rehab stay.

Length of stay
A patient’s time in the hospital is always reviewed to ensure we’re making the most of your stay. In 2011, 70 percent of our stroke patients were able to return home, exceeding the national average of 67 percent.

Transfers Back to Acute Care
On average, 11 percent of stroke patients in rehabiliation experience unplanned transfers back to acute care, whereas only 7 percent of St. Luke's patients required these unplanned transfers.

Stamp Out Stroke Support Group

All patients and families affected by stroke are encouraged to attend meetings for support, to have questions answered and more. Guest Speakers talk about rehabilitation, prevention of a second stroke and caretaker issues. Promised to be a positive time to share and gather ideas.

Meets the second Thursday of each month from 3:00 - 4:30 p.m. Learn more about location and program detail.>
