Women and Heart Disease

You are unique – and so is your heart.

Your heart, it's always there for you. Quietly going about its business - making sure that you can do all the things you need to do and take care of the people you love. With all you do every day, it's easy to take your heart's health for granted. St. Luke's is here to help.

Many women are unaware of the fact that heart attacks are the leading cause of death for both women and men. But while the risk for heart attack is the same for women and men, a woman's heart responds differently.

Women don't always have pain in their arm or chest when they have a heart attack. Instead, a woman may have other symptoms such as nausea, heartburn, and back or jaw pain. Women are also less likely than men to believe they're having a heart attack and more likely to delay seeking emergency treatment.

The most important thing you can do? Trust your body. If you think something is wrong, don't hesitate to call 9-1-1.
